I'm excited for you and your family and your move to one of my favortie congregations. That was Paul's and my unofficial cong since I started at YDS and we continue to stay connected to them via newsletter, email and facebook. So don't be surprised if we show up some Sunday AM when we are in town! God's blessings to you all - i'm in the south now, y'all know - as you move to one of my favorite cities. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive."
This is from "The Call of the Wild," a book we're reading in English class. I saw the word ecstasy and felt compelled to include the quote in response to your blog entry. In all our attention to living life radically and differently, we can live and at the same time forget we're living... it's a paradox, like making a sacrifice for the God that we can never really repay. Just some food for thought, for those of us that are giving up chocolate, meat, candy or something like that and don't have the chance to eat what they want :) and just something to keep in mind.

I have long loved this passage from 1 Peter 3:15b-16a:

Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence.

Articulating just how Christ lives in us can be challenging and exciting. How do we build that into our CtK life together?

Spending time with a Christian brother or sister in prayer is a valuable part of my pastoral ministry. How does prayer at CtK filter throughout the congregation?

These are just two questions that seem to apply to the quality characteristic of Passionate Spirituality.

I was struck at a strange parallel I felt as I read Jim's account of your time with the boys in Beit Jala. Just this week a couple of young girls with, let's just say, "not the greatest home life" were running happily around in a local church in Brattleboro, Vermont where community meals are offered weekly. They ran and giggled and told scary stories with glee and abandonment. Free from their own kind of "giant prison" of poverty and mother's with psycho-social problems. Even if just for one evening a week. Like Jim, I am continually amazed at the resilience, hope and faith in Christ these children have, despite their situations. I'm amazed at how "our" children in Brattleboro can have such a similar life situation to the youth in Beit Jala, but caused by totally different agents of oppression ....none of which they are responsible for. For children there and here such a life is unfathomable to most of us. I am thankful for each of you and your pilgrimage of peace in the midst of conflict, oppression and injustice. I know each step you take is blessed. We uplifted you all in prayer at both of our services as well as during Children's Church today. Bishop Payne was our special guest preacher for Rachel's Day when we celebrated all of God's children, but especially those living in poverty, ill health, war-torn areas, and crisis. Our bulletin was printed with a picture of the mosaic depicting a hen protecting her chicks under her wings (Matthew 23: 37-39) that can be found at Dominus Flavit Church in Jerusalem. We are blessed to have you serving as pilgrims bringing hope to our fellow sisters and brothers who sometimes feel hopeless. God grant you peace, safety and memorable experiences that you can share with those of us who travel with you in heart and in prayer. God's blessings, Paula

Re: Ascension Day experience in Jerusalem

Dear Pilgrims,
Please know that you are in our prayers back here. I am following your travels, and travelogues, photos etc. Each day experiencing the ministry of accompaniment in prayer and in Spirit. We prayed for you today at our mission region assembly. The photos are beautiful, and I am so glad to have them to have a glimpse of what you are seeing, and your words to hear what you are thinking. The light looks incredible.
